Scholarships
BESO offers scholarships to high school and university students in Bocas del Toro (Isla Colon and the surrounding islands). In general we do not offer scholarships to primary school, except in special circumstances.
BESO depends on the community to identify and recommend deserving students for scholarships. If you sponsor a student, the process is:
- Scholarship Application Paperwork – Complete the BESO Beca application, attach a teacher recommendation, a copy of the most recent grades and a statement from you describing the student and the need.
- Submit the paperwork to a BESO member or drop off for Kelly at the Buena Vista restaurant.
- The committee meets monthly on the first Friday of the month and discusses all pending applications. BESO will notify you when the application has been approved/disapproved, or if more information is required.
- If approved, BESO pays the sponsor the total amount granted. Standard awards are $100 for the school year for high school students and $200 per semester (up to a total of $400 for the academic year) for university students.
- The sponsor manages the amount granted and can chose how to disburse the funds. Some choose to go shopping with high school students and purchase uniforms and supplies, others request receipts for school purchases. It is up to you.
Renewals:
University Scholarships are renewable every semester based on grades. To renew, submit a new application with grades attached. (2 times a year)
High School Scholarships are renewable every new school year, also based on grades. To renew, submit a new application with grades attached. (Annually) .Click here for the Scholarship Application
